The Daintree is the oldest continuously surviving tropical rainforest on Earth, part of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area. Right on its doorstep lies the Great Barrier Reef, a second World Heritage area. For school groups, universities and international study tours, it is a living classroom where students can walk among plant lineages millions of years old, then stand on a beach where the rainforest meets the reef.

Why bring a school group to the Daintree

    • A rainforest older than the dinosaurs’ extinction. Students see ancient plant families first-hand rather than in a textbook.
    • Wildlife found nowhere else. The Daintree is home to rare and unusual animals, including the endangered southern cassowary.
    • Two World Heritage areas side by side. At Cape Tribulation the rainforest runs right down to the sea, a powerful way to show how land and reef are connected.
    • Culture and Country. The Daintree is the traditional Country of the Eastern Kuku Yalanji people, and students can learn about their deep connection to this landscape.

What students can learn in the Daintree

    • Rainforest ecology: how one of the most biodiverse places on Earth works, from the canopy to the forest floor.
    • Wildlife and adaptation: how animals like the cassowary help spread seeds and keep the forest alive. Explore more in our guide to Daintree Rainforest animals.
    • Connected ecosystems: how mangroves, rivers and rainforest catchments protect the reef offshore.
    • Conservation in action: how this World Heritage area is protected, and how visitors can help. See Daintree Care.
    • First Nations knowledge: the stories and culture of the Eastern Kuku Yalanji people. Read more in Stories and Culture.

Daintree trip ideas for educational groups

A rainforest day from Cairns or Port Douglas

Cape Tribulation is about two and a half hours’ drive north of Cairns, crossing the Daintree River by ferry. A guided day can include easy boardwalks such as the Dubuji Boardwalk and Madja Boardwalk, a Daintree River cruise and time on the beach at Cape Tribulation. Compare Daintree Rainforest tours.

Mossman Gorge and culture

Mossman Gorge, in the southern part of Daintree National Park, offers guided cultural walks with Kuku Yalanji guides, a meaningful way for students to see the rainforest through First Nations eyes. See the Mossman Gorge walk.

Staying overnight

For longer study tours, staying in or near the Daintree gives students time for night walks and early-morning wildlife. Browse Daintree Rainforest accommodation.

Planning your Daintree school trip: common questions

“Is the Daintree suitable for younger students?”

Yes. Many of the best walks are flat, short boardwalks, which suit primary school groups as well as older students. Tell us the ages in your group and we will suggest the right mix of walks and activities.

“Can we fit the Daintree and the reef into one trip?”

Absolutely. Most groups spend one day in the Daintree and one day on the reef, staying in Cairns or Port Douglas. It is the simplest way for students to experience both World Heritage areas.

“What should students bring?”

Comfortable closed shoes, a hat, insect repellent, a refillable water bottle and a light rain jacket, as the rainforest can be wet at any time of year. Our Daintree packing guide has the full list.

“We are a university group running a field trip. Can you help?”

Yes. Share your course focus, group size and travel dates, and we will help you plan a rainforest and reef programme that fits your learning goals.
